In the early spring of 1988, deep in the mountains of Bosnia, hunters find a wild child living with wolves. They have no idea who he might be and the boy is given a random name, Haris; the local authorities send him in urgent procedure to the central orphanage of SFRY in Belgrade.

Although the medical prognosis is grim, caretaker Ilke tries to help the boy in every way. First signs of progress become apparent when Haris connects with Žika (15), another boy from the orphanage. However, Žika’s father comes to collect him and he has to leave the orphanage, leaving Haris all alone again. Waiting for Žika to fulfill his promise of coming back for him, Haris utters his first words. Not long after that he starts school and becomes fairly socialised.

Žika comes back again after his father throws him out of their home. However, nothing is as it once was. Žika can not return into the orphanage. Unable to cope with the new situation, Žika commits suicide. It is 1992. Bosnia and Herzegovina is consumed by war. A letter from the Bosnian local government requesting Haris’ speedy return arrives at the orphanage. Ilke tries to hold on to the boy. He hides him at his house but the police find the boy and send him back to Bosnia.

Upon his return to Bosnia, Haris has no place to go. Wandering aimlessly, he encounters a group of soldiers who take him with them. He gets a rifle and goes into combat.

One night, after a bloody battle, Haris comes to the first decision in his life. He leaves the rifle behind and goes back to the mountain where he was first found. He leaves the war and chaos farther and farther behind him. Finally, he reaches a creek and watches his face in it. He takes out a marble he brought with him, turns to the sky and peers through it…

“No One’s Child” is based on a true story.
