Hourglass is a tale of a Serbian-Jewish-Hungarian family seen through the eyes of the almost-adult son who is trying to reconstruct his childhood from pieces of dreams and memories. An almost forgotten world – the world of a medieval city with all its specificities – emerges from the memories of the sensitive boy and his father who, running from paralysing fears and utter humiliation, ends up playing the madman and turning into a solitary clown in the play of his life. Although Hourglass is the anatomy of senseless hatred and fear, the warmth and irony permeating the story prevent it from remaining just another story on pain and suffering.
